The Ultimate Diya! The Ultimate light!

Sukhasana (easy cross legged pose), ardh siddhasana and lotus pose (padmasana) have often reminded me of the traditional diya we light during Diwali. The shape is such!  The crossed legs as the container of energy, like our oil lamp holds the oil; and the spinal axis with its 7 main energy centers reaching into the human brain as the wick that can light up when the right action is performed.

Yoga, after all is all about a practice to rev up our voltage!

The legs, the hips, I see as the source of energy. That’s why so much emphasis on movement, exercise to generate energy. This is mechanical energy corresponding to the earth element in our system. The hard set bones, our structure : this is the earth. Our body is the earthen diya defining our unique shape.

As we go through movement followed by sitting practices, energy transforms and purifies. The mechanical energy, transforms to chemical energy that corresponds to the water element in the body. Seen as the greatest chemical solvent, the human body is 72% water. When we sit and concentrate, we purify this element of water through the element of fire.  The practice of concentration (Dharna) corresponds to the fire element. It  creates  transformation and purifies the water element.

The elecrtical energy associated with the air element corresponds to nerve impulses. Electrical impulses=messages between the brain and the body. The air element is accessed through awareness of breath and  sensations. As we ‘sit’ and allow energies to transform and purify we gain clarity, our perception sharpens.Dhyan happens/ possibility for Samadhi opens up this is connection to the space element.

May we keep revving up our voltage. May we be inspired by all the lights around us.
